We're looking at something big, folks: A federal marijuana bill is moving forward in Congress. Of course, it's not full-scale, federal legalization, but it is a step in the right direction. After several days of lengthy debate, the House Financial Services Committee voted 45 to 15 to advance the legislation.
I'm talking about the SAFE Act - a bill that will allow banks to provide services like bank accounts for cannabis-related businesses, without the fear of being brought up on federal charges for money laundering, given the banks comply with state laws. Before, cannabis companies weren't allowed to open bank accounts in most banks, due to the federal ban. This meant marijuana businesses were completely cash-based operations - an expensive and, in fact, dangerous way of conducting business
A lot of cash was changing hands every day, and everyone knew it. Marijuana-based businesses were at high risk of robbery as a result, and they had to spend extra cash - literally - on expensive surveillance and security.
This new bill will completely fix the flawed, and frankly dangerous, system. Not only that, but this bill is opening a big door for cannabis - legitimacy. The days of shady dealers and back-alley transactions are fading, and the black market is slowly being replaced by clean, well-lit stores that... that can now take credit cards.
We're looking at the biggest market opportunity since prohibition ended.
Now we're seeing new companies cropping up every day, and they're trading for a couple dollars per share - the sort of tiny firms with some of the highest profit potential.
