Here's Today's Tip... Tired of Green Tea?

 

Most people are familiar with green tea's capability to boost metabolism and fat burning. However, did you know there are several other versions of tea that may have super fat-burning powers? It's true, and while I'm a regular green tea drinker, I've been experimenting with a couple new teas that I can't wait to tell you about.

The first one is white tea, which, like green and black teas, is also made from the Camellia sinensis plant. However, in contrast to green and black teas, white tea is manufactured only from the youngest buds and first leaves that are plucked and dried with minimal processing. As a result, it contains higher concentrations of the fat-burning compounds found in green tea (e.g., EGCG, caffeine, theobromine).

It's these compounds that are known to have powerful fat-burning effects. Experts estimate that white tea may increase metabolic rate and calorie burn by as much as 5% (that's over 100 calories per day) and fat burning by as much as 16%. In a study published in the journal Nutrition & Metabolism German researchers found that white tea inhibited fat storage and increased fat burning.

Another tea that I've been drinking lately is oolong tea, which has been shown to increase fat burning as well as inhibit pancreatic lipase activity. Pancreatic lipase is a key enzyme that plays a pivotal role in the digestion and absorption of dietary fat. By reducing the activity of this enzyme, less fat is absorbed by the intestine, and that means fewer calories are absorbed. In essence, this is a "fat blocking" effect.

In addition to its "fat blocking" effects and capability to increase fat burning, a study published in the Journal of Nutrition demonstrated that consumption of oolong tea significantly increased metabolic rate (by as much as 3.4%, or about 85 additional calories per day) in healthy human subjects. What's more, the researchers found that consumption of oolong tea led to a 12% increase in fat burning.

In recent randomized controlled trial published in the Chinese Journal of Integrative Medicine, Chinese researchers set out to examine the anti-obesity effects of oolong tea consumption in overweight and obese folks. After 6 weeks, both overweight and obese participants who drank oolong tea daily lost significantly more weight than the placebo group, with obese subjects losing as much as 6 pounds. This led the authors to conclude, "Chronic consumption of oolong tea may protect against obesity."
