Max Monday: Help Yourself to This Million-Making "Family Secret" By Tim Melvin
Dear Reader,
Happy Monday!
It's a new start of the week, so it is time to share some more books and articles I read recently that I found either educational, instructive, or just plain old entertaining.
This Week's Worthwhile Books
Investing the Templeton Way: The Market-Beating Strategies of Value Investing's Legendary Bargain Hunter
Lauren Templeton learned investing from her father and her great-uncle. That uncle just happened to be one of the best investors of all time, Sir John Templeton. In this book she shares the lessons learned from the man that Money Magazine once called the greatest stock picker of the past century. There is more than a little bit of the Templeton method in the approach I use to pick stocks for Max Wealth and Heatseekers. We all stand on the shoulders of giants and Ms. Templeton offers us access to the shoulders of one of the great investors. Get a copy of the book for yourself here.
The Dhandho Investor: The Low-Risk Value Method to High Returns
Mohnish Pabrai has had an enormous amount of success as a hedge fund manager and is considered one of the best of our time. He uses an approach that he calls "Heads I win huge; Tails I don't lose much". Pabrai outlines how to find big, yet infrequent bets with asymmetric gains and then use the Kell Formula to size your bets in a way that maximizes gains and limits losses to the greatest degree possible in something as uncertain as the financial markets. The story of the incredible success of the Patel family of India in the U.S. hospitality markets in not only a great story it's a powerful business lesson. It is an enjoyable and highly educational read. Click here to buy a copy.
This Week's Quick Read Articles
Data Update 8: Dividends and Buybacks - Fact and Fiction
This topic is getting beat to death in Congress and the media. As I have discussed recently buybacks are agnostic. The end results of buybacks are determined by intent, valuation, and method of financing. In this article Aswath Damodaran, a professor at NYU and widely acknowledged expert on valuation and finance, goes into the math of buybacks and how they impact the real world. After you read it here, you should probably forward it to your Congressman.
Joel Greenblatt on the Opportunity in Misbehavior
We are hard wired from birth to be bad at investing. The personality traits and action needed to be consistently successful in the markets are the exact opposite of what the lizard part of our brain wants us to do. Finding a strategy that takes advantage of other mistakes may seem harsh but it is the way to make the big money in stocks. It is what we do here at Max Wealth and have perfected in the strategies that drive the high return strategies I use in my premium service Heatseekers. Click here for the article.
You Played Yourself
The discussion of 40,000 people going to the Berkshire Hathaway meeting next week all calling themselves contrarians makes this worth the read by itself. However, the piece goes deeper into the various types of bias people use to game themselves. "Behavioral Finance" tells us that we are aware of bias we can exploit for fun and profits. The author does remind us that we are all human and therefore have some type of bias, as it is completely natural. As investors-and probably just as humans-we need to be aware of how our brains work and how our particular forms of bias may mislead us. Continue reading here.
India: Tourists See One of Seven Wonders, Investors See the Eighth
Not reading this article closely will cost you money. India is the top performing market in U.S. Dollar terms over the past five years, and investing in the world and in the world's most populous democracy. India has been growing at the highest rate in the world the past few years and this should continue going forward. John Templeton's niece and her partner lay out the case for what just might be the best way to invest in India. Blowing off just ten minutes to read and to ponder the conclusions instead to watch Wheel of Fortune or a cable news network could easily be one of the most expensive mistakes you ever make. Read more here.
