"Let the 4-wheel drive do the work."
That's what my buddy Dave would repeat over and over as we were heading up the nastiest, muddiest, roughest trail I've ever had the pleasure of driving over.
This was all taking place on our way up to our Elk hunting camp.
It was mandatory that you stopped your truck at the rancher's house and got out to put chains on all the tires for extra traction.
The rancher made everyone do it because he didn't want to have to go out and pull someone out of the mud with his tractor.
It took roughly 2 and a half hours to drive just a few miles into the backcountry from his ranch.
There was no road. Just a faint trail.
This trail wound its way up and around the mountains through aspen groves and through a particularly muddy stretch that was created when a beaver dammed up the little creek that flowed through.
One guy buried his truck so deep in that mud he couldn't even open the door to get out.
We were lucky enough to make it around that guy, and the whole time Dave kept saying "let the 4-wheel drive do the work"… 'Let the chains do the work."
We would have never made it without 4-wheel drive and chains.
A bit of technology coupled with a tried-and-true tool – tire chains – can make life a lot easier.
