As I write this, Verizon Communications Inc. (NYSE:VZ) announced its expanding its 5G network to two new cities: Denver and Providence, Rhode Island. That's in addition to Chicago and Minneapolis. This year, the carrier plans on opening 5G in more than 30 U.S. cities overall, including Atlanta, Boston, Dallas, Detroit, Houston, Indianapolis, Kansas City, Phoenix, San Diego, Salt Lake City and Washington D.C. And Verizon has four 5G-ready phones on offer, including the Samsung Galaxy S10 5G, and the LG V50 ThinQ 5G. AT&T Inc. (NYSE:T) has rolled out its 5G network to 19 cities across the U.S. And T-Mobile US Inc. (Nasdaq:TMUS) is planning to launch its 5G network in 30 U.S. cities, starting with New York City, Los Angeles, Dallas, and Las Vegas. 5G is ramping up not just at home, but around the world at the same time. In Australia, it's already operating in 10 cities. In Europe, there are currently 138 5G trials underway, and 10 digital cross-border corridors have been established. Of course, 5G is about much more than just faster smartphone service. The internet of things (IoT) - a world of connected appliances and devices including everything from autonomous vehicles to robotic surgical instruments - will see a massive upgrade and expansion thanks to the greater speeds provided by 5G. Statista projects there will be 20.4 billion IoT devices by 2020. Commercial 5G networks are expected to launch in China later this year as the nation also prepares to initiate smartphone 5G service. In fact, the Chinese government just awarded the nation's three mobile operators and the state-owned broadcaster 5G licenses, which Qualcomm China chairman Frank Meng said will elevate the country to one of the top slots in the worldwide 5G race. And when you combine 5G with the capabilities of artificial intelligence, you're going to see wholly new businesses and sectors pop up as a result that can use the massive amounts of data generated by machines and devices in real time. All told, we're looking at a situation where 5G is projected to generate $12.3 trillion over the next decade - more than the GDPs of France, Germany, and Japan combined.
