Hong Kong Protests Reality Gap: Western media is still not giving adequate coverage to the Hong Kong demonstrations, but they are the one major source of uncertainty left on the trade deal with China. The Hong Kong protesters are looking to ramp up their activity into the New Year after months of protests and a string of victories. First, they managed to get the bill that would allow extradition of Hong Kongers to mainland China removed. Then, they won local elections, however symbolic that was. Lastly, they managed to get Congress to denounce the treatment the protesters have received at the hands of the China-backed authorities, and had President Trump sign that document. Going into 2020, any increase in violence from the side of the police, not to mention an intervention by China's military, could push U.S. popular opinion strongly against further negotiations with China. Western news may be largely ignoring Hong Kong right now, but it's key not only to human rights in China, but also to trade negotiations.
