Reuters reported the presidential hopeful told mining companies he’d get behind domestic production of lithium, copper, rare earths, and nickel. The move would continue strong support from President Trump for the U.S. critical minerals industry. ➤ Australia became the world's top spot for metals finance. An analysis by Mining.com showed Aussie mining firms raised more cash so far in 2020 than other finance centers like Canada and South Africa. The top three Australian miners raised nearly $1.5 billion in equity for gold, rare earth metals, and fertilizer. ➤ Caterpillar funded robotic mining. The heavy equipment manufacturer partnered with local universities to develop unmanned systems in South Dakota. Local officials suggested it could revitalize the state’s mining industry. ➤ America prepared to drill the surface of the moon. NASA tapped Houston-based Intuitive Machines to deliver a drilling rig to the moon’s surface by the end of 2022. The planned drilling will recover deep samples of lunar ice, investigating water sources for future landings. ➤ The largest national forest opened for mining. But it might be brief. The U.S. Forest Service lifted restrictions on mineral development in Alaska’s Tongass National Forest last week.
