Hump day!

That's right, we're already halfway through the week (hooray!) but the last two days have brought what feels like a year's worth of sports news. No time to waste…

While we celebrate today, our work is far from done.

— Tennis legend Billie Jean King, commemorating 50 years of equal prize money at the US Open. Back in 1973 — one year after BJK won her third Open — the female and male winners took home the same sum for the first time. Fighting for equality always pays off.

Spanish women's national team

😡 This is exhausting

Source: ESPN

The GIST: Just over a week after forcibly kissing player Jenni Hermoso after Spain's 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup win, calls for Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) president Luis Rubiales to resign continue to grow louder by the day.

  • The increasing demands come as rumors swirl that Spain's women's national team head coach Jorge Vilda may also be out of a job soon. So what's the hold up?

The latest: While Rubiales' mother began a hunger strike in response to what she deems a "witch hunt" of her son, the regional presidents of RFEF called for Rubiales to resign on Monday.

  • It's a stunning reversal, especially after the federation recently threatened to sue Hermoso and the 80 other Spanish women's footballers who said they would refuse call-up to the national team as long as Rubiales remains in power.

What's next: Outside of his resignation, which seems unlikely given his prior history, the fastest way for Rubiales to lose his job is for the RFEF general assembly to give him a vote of no confidence. Why hasn't that happened? Well, it would have to come from the same general assembly that applauded Rubiales last week when he refused to step down. Not holding our breath.

  • If the RFEF doesn't take action, FIFA, which has already issued Rubiales a provisional 90-day suspension, could ban him from all football for up to 15 years.
  • Meanwhile, there's also a potential criminal case against Rubiales looming. Spanish prosecutors launched a preliminary investigation into the incident on Monday and Hermoso now has two weeks to decide if she wants to formally pursue charges.
  • All the while, RFEF is reportedly exploring whether or not they can fire Vilda, Rubiales' right-hand man, who has been the subject of mistreatment accusations of his own. Enough is enough.
PWHL

🏒 An icy glow-up

The GIST: Pro women's hockey is back in North America, baby! The Professional Women's Hockey League (PWHL) was revealed yesterday, along with key details and dates for the new venture.

The details: Composed of the now-defunct PWHPA and PHF, the PWHL will begin a 24-game season in January 2024 with six inaugural teams — Boston, Minneapolis-St. Paul, Montreal, New York City area, Ottawa, and Toronto. Notably, Buffalo and Connecticut — two cities that featured in the PHF since its inception — won't be part of the "Original Six."

  • As for the timeline, free agency kicks off this Friday, followed by a 15-round draft on September 18th in Toronto. From there, it's tryout szn. Undrafted talents will have the opportunity to try out for teams, or be signed as free agents.
  • Training camps start mid-November, allowing for two months to develop cohesion before the puck drops in January.

The backstory: This June, news broke that PWHPA partners, the Mark Walter Group and Billie Jean King Enterprises, acquired the PHF, marking the end of a years-long rift between the two leagues.

  • Even though small-market PHF cities lose out in the short-term, the unification of competing pro leagues has previously paved the way for many great North American sports leagues, like the NFL and MLB, and could prove crucial for continued women's hockey success. Drop that puck.

✏️ A handy how-to

We get it. Sometimes sports can feel like a "boys' club." And that same stigma applies to the hobby of trading and collecting sports cards. The cards provide a way for fans to feel closer to the games and athletes they love, but unfortunately the community sometimes feels overcrowded with dudes.

That's why Topps teamed up with us — a company all about celebrating and including underserved sports fans — for a comprehensive guide on how to start in the hobby.

If you've ever watched Iowa women's basketball star Caitlin Clark drill a 40-footer and wished you could be a part of that magic, you'll be into card trading — just like Clark herself. Swish.

August may be slipping away like a bottle of wine, but the party of the season is just beginning: The US Open is tennis, New York, and summer at their very best. From the game's top players to the famously rowdy crowd, there's absolutely nothing like being there in person.

  • The main draw is underway, which means you only have a week and a half left to make like Coco Gauff and book your ticket to the tournament's toughest and most exciting rounds.
