Yet Big Pharma, with its deep pockets and army of legal eagles, ignored the law (as well as their ethics) and went ahead and did it anyway. They filed for a patent ON A HERB... a common food indigenous to the people of India. Unbelievably at the time, the U.S. Patent Office didn't seem to have a problem with the idea. So they went ahead and awarded Patent #5,401,504, specifically granting the University of Mississippi Medical Center EXCLUSIVE RIGHTS to sell and distribute this powerful, medicinal herb--worldwide. "You can't do that! It's biopiracy!" the people of India screamed. To put this in perspective, it'd be like Big Pharma trying to patent yoga. Why would Big Pharma want to tie up the global rights to this little-known herb? Well, what if I told you this Indian healing herb has been proven to successfully treat over 300 diseases and conditions? That's right. Yes, I admit, that does sound a little wild-eyed.
