Max Monday: Use This Idea to Maximize Your Returns
By Tim Melvin

Dear Reader,

Happy Monday!

I've mentioned before that I believe I owe a lot of my success to an unstoppable appetite for reading. Anywhere that someone has stored knowledge is somewhere my eyes want to be. Whether it's from books, newspapers, scholarly journals, or quarterly reports, a thirst for information is tremendously important for every investor. That's why I take the time to share this list of worthwhile books and quick-dive articles with you each week.

So it's time to share some of the things from my list that I found educational, instructive, or just plain old entertaining...

This Week's Books

Lethal Agent (A Mitch Rapp Novel Book 16) - by Kyle Mills

Vince Flynn started the Mitch Rapp covert ops series, but has since passed away. Kyle Mills is a bestselling author in his own right, and he has done a fantastic job of keeping the story going using Flynn's characters. These are solid reads with excellent storylines often plucked right from today's headlines. While I do suggest starting with book one and working your way forward, they can be read on a standalone basis without missing too much of the plot. I read the latest entry in the series on the beach this weekend and it did not disappoint.

Shareholder Yield: A Better Approach to Dividend Investing- by Meb Faber

I'm a huge fan of Meb Faber and find his insights have helped me become a better investor. He has a world-class mind and understands the value of rigorously testing not only his own ideas, but also those that others put forward as the holy grail of investing. In this book, he offers up rules and concepts that increase the overall return of dividend stocks by calculating the total shareholder return yield. He looks at other uses of cash flow including share repurchases, debt pay-down, reinvestment in the business, and mergers and acquisitions to find ways to maximize your ultimate return.

Your Deep Dive Articles

One of the World's Top Investors Just Rang the Alarm, Again

Lim Chow Kiat, the head of Singapore's Sovereign Wealth Fund is suggesting that we're living in uncertain times and facing lower returns from current market levels. I've been preaching that message for some time as well. My research shows future index returns of sub 5% annually and a strong possibility of another lost decade in stocks. The strategies I use to find stocks in those conditions performed well then, and I strongly suspect they will again the next time we have low-to-negative returns for an extended period in the stock market. Mr. Kiat advised keeping cash on hand as a tool and I find that I'm in agreement. Click here to read more.

A Wandering Mind: How Travel Can Change the Way You Think

I'm writing this from the beach at Tybee Island, GA. It's about halfway between my sister's house in South Carolina and mine in Southwest Florida, so we met there yesterday for a long weekend. This morning we were in Savannah, GA wandering around the town, investigating the beautiful historic district, and contemplating the incredible history of the town. As we walked, we were passed regularly by trolleys full of tourists who never got off of them. It bothers me that the Savannah they experience is whatever the trolley driver decides to give them. This article gives great insights and suggestions about how you can improve your travels and begin experiencing those places instead of merely seeing them. You can read on here.

Value Investing in Real Estate

A 30-minute webinar from Chris Mayer and David Sherman the co-directors of the esteemed Paul Milstein Center for Real Estate at Columbia Business School. Value investing was born at Columbia and they continue to espouse this investment approach. After watching the video, you might want to visit the Milstein Center for Real Estate's website and browse some of the additional research available in real estate investing. Real Returns in a World of Negative Rates & Are US Banks on Sale or Doomed?

We spend a lot of time talking about the possibility of negative interest rates in the United States and what it could mean for the market. Does eliminating everything that lies at the core of modern financial theory mean that assets are worth infinity, or zero, or is it someplace in between that we do not yet know how to calculate? Is it really possible that finding an asset that loses less than the cost of financing it will be a wildly profitable trading strategy? There are a lot of interesting, or even terrifying potential scenarios, and this article does a solid job of opening the discussion.

To the Max,

Tim Melvin

Here's what else I'm following...
SEPTEMBER 30: A "Superhuman" Technology Is Expected to Take the Medical World by Storm

A new technology with "superhuman" healing powers has the ability to help cure some of the world's deadliest diseases. It's increasing these patients' survival odds by over 95% - and today, September 30, it might become the OFFICIAL nationwide gold standard. That means that a massive cash surge could follow right on its heels. (Prepare now...)
