Feb 8, 2023 Daily DC Insider This is why fact checkers are questioning Joe Biden's recent claims Image Source: Fox News/Getty Several fact-checkers found that President Biden's claim that he cut the deficit by a record $1.7 trillion during his State of the Union address on Tuesday night was misleading and lacked context. There was an immediate backlash against Biden's comments from liberal media outlets. President Biden was right when he said that the annual federal deficit fell from $3.1 trillion in fiscal year 2020 to $1.4 trillion in fiscal year 2022. As the fact checkers pointed out, however, the lack of context in this calculation shows that Biden's fiscal policies were not the only or even primary factor in bringing the deficit down. During his State of the Union address, Biden also blamed former President Trump's administration for the soaring national debt. Nonetheless, bipartisan support for multi-trillion dollar spending to stabilize the economy during the pandemic accounted for a significant portion of that growth.
