FBI Director Christopher Wray blamed a lab leak in Wuhan, China, for the spread of COVID-19.
According to Wray, the FBI has experts who study the "dangers of biological threats."
The Chinese government, he added, has been actively seeking to thwart research into the virus's genesis.
Wray's remarks follow an earlier assessment by the Department of Energy, which concluded that the COVID-19 epidemic was most likely originated by a lab breach in China.
Director of National Intelligence Avril Haines's office updated a paper from 2021 to reflect the new information.
While the National Intelligence Council and four additional government agencies have "low confidence" that COVID-19 was spread naturally from an infected animal, the CIA and the rest of the government are unsure.
