Special Edition – Tuesday, July 30th
From The GIST Team

Good morning!

Did you know pools could be slow? Neither did we. On that note, let's dive into another day of enlightening Olympic coverage.

Snapshots of the Day

🏊 Mondays must be for medals, because the American swimmers cleaned up in the pool yesterday. Katie Grimes and Emma Weyant (women's 400 IM medley) won silver and bronze, respectively, Luke Hobson (200m freestyle) snagged bronze, and now seven-time Olympic medalist (and soon-to-be girl dad) Ryan Murphy claimed bronze in the 100m backstroke.

🛹 But wait, there's more hardware — American Jagger Eaton captured silver and compatriot Nyjah Huston won bronze during yesterday's men's skateboarding street final. They've got the moves like

🏀 Team USA women's basketball extended their Olympic win streak to 56 games with a dominant 102–76 win over Japan in yesterday's opener. Superstars A'ja Wilson and Breanna Stewart combined for 46 points and six blocks. All in a day's work.

🏉 Superstar Ilona Maher and the women's sevens rugby squad are through to their first-ever Olympic semi after yesterday's smashing 17–7 quarter-final win over Great Britain. The Eagles next face defending Olympic champs New Zealand today at 9:30 a.m. ET — take that, haters.

🎾 Novak Djokovic cruised to a straight-sets win over King of Clay Rafael Nadal yesterday in what was likely the final matchup between two of the greatest tennis players ever.

🏖️🏐 From the hardwood to the sand courts, former NBAer Chase Budinger is making history. After a seven-year pro hoops career, Budinger made his Olympic debut in beach volleyball for Team USA yesterday and is hoping to nab another W today at 2 p.m. ET.

🤽 The U.S. women's water polo team (aka the three-time defending gold medalists) brought the noise but sadly lost 13–11 to Spain in yesterday's group play rematch of the Tokyo 2020 gold medal game. Onto the next.

🏐 The U.S. women's volleyball team battled hard but also found themselves on the losing end of a thrilling five-setter against the People's Republic of China yesterday.

The GIST: Team USA gymnastics is bringing the party in Paris, with the men's squad finally ending a 16-year medal drought and the women favored to take the team final in just a few hours. Let's flip to it.

American men win bronze, first Olympic team medal since 2008: The ultra-enthusiastic red, white, and blue exceeded expectations on all six events — floor, rings, vault, parallel bars, horizontal bar, and pommel horse — to capture bronze behind perennial podium powerhouses Japan (gold) and China (silver).

Jordan Chiles takes on bigger role in the women's team final: The American women's squad sidelined 16-year-old Hezly Rivera after a shaky Olympic debut and will instead feature Chiles and Simone Biles in all four events — floor, beam, uneven bars, and vault — during today's 12:15 p.m. ET team competition.

CanWNT drone spying scandal

The GIST: Yesterday, No. 8 CanWNT formally appealed the six-point deduction handed down by FIFA in the wake of their ongoing drone scandal. A resolution could be imminent as the case is fast-tracked before group stage games conclude…tomorrow. Buckle up.

Canada protests sanction for "unfairly punish[ing] athletes": ICYMI, on Saturday CanWNT was docked six points from their group stage total amid shocking espionage allegations. The sanction currently leaves them with 0 points, erasing the six points earned from their two group stage wins (teams earn three for a win, one for a draw, zero for a loss).

  • While it's not impossible for the red and white to advance out of Group A, it won't be easy, even with the victories — and stars like Vanessa Gilles are sharing their frustration as the team feels they're being punished for a crime they did not commit.

What's next: An appeal hearing is expected today, with a possible verdict from the Court of Arbitration for Sport anticipated tomorrow, ideally before Canada's final group stage game against No. 22 Colombia kicks off at 3 p.m. ET. It truly all comes down to this.
