There was a heated debate at a House Judiciary Committee organizational meeting over whether or not members should be allowed to invite constituents to lead the pledge of allegiance at the start of committee meetings.

Rep. David Cicilline (D-R.I.) challenged the amendment by Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.), arguing that anyone who supports an insurrection against the United States should not be allowed to lead the pledge.

Using the pledge and a recent proposal in the House Rules Committee to condemn socialism, Republican Rep. Chip Roy of Texas blasted Democrats for their opposition to basic principles.
